We have all heard that the typical geoscientist has been recorded spending 40% of he working day looking for or manipulating data. In other words, not working. Managing the data to reduce this % is a goal given to many IM departments and has been on the agenda for at least 15 years. But take heart! There is a desirable minimum time % which we should not move below. Some time manipulating of the data is good for the professional staff - they have a good idea of the provenance and the quality control/pre-conditioning that has been done. Seismic data is a case in point. Often test panels are sent at the early stages of processing and as that data is loaded, care is taken not to clip or compress to remove the subtleties. Similarly, if you leave the loading and environmental corrections of your logs to an untrained Petrophysicist, you may find cycle skips are left in or key markers are taken out...

For NDB, we do not differentiate between digital and paper data. A search for an old report is just as much part of the aforementioned 40% as a trawl through old tapes for a SEG-Y. Treated as a whole, data stagnation can be reduced.
